The Lithuanian Human Services Council is a division of the Lithuanian American Community,lnc. The Council's goals are to help the people of the community, especially the people of Lithuanian descent, to improve the lives of senior citizens, to help the newcomers to the US to adjust to a new way of life, and to help people of various ages as needed.

About Our Organization

The Lithuanian Human Services Council of the USA, Inc. is located in its own building at 2711 W. 71st Street, Chicago IL 60629, where there are three offices, a hall for meetings and gatherings.

This office is open Monday and Wednesday from 9:00 AM. T0 3:00 PM. Here, people of all ages, receive instruction and counseling with regard to general health and hygiene, information and assistance

Community Support Services

In the USA, mostly in Chicago area, today we have people of Lithuanian decent from three different Immigration waves: the first immigration before World War II, the second immigration after World War II, and the third immigration during the 1990's. These various and very diverse groups of people need different types of help. The senior citizens need help with various form filings for various government institution, insurance and the like.

Senior Citizen Care

For senior citizens and others who may from time to time need aid, our agency provides a full range of social welfare assistance. The social services office helps people with their diverse needs.

Immigrant Assistance

The people from the latest immigration wave need help to start their lives in a new country, to assimilate in to a new culture.

Assistance with regard to the following areas of general interest:

  1. Circuit Breakers

  1. Social security payments

  1. Disability payments

  1. Out-reach services

  1. Translation aid

  1. Senior homeowner's exemption

  2. General counseling

  3. Escort services

  4. General information delivery

  5. Public aid

  6. Taxation problems

  7. Citizenship

  8. Meals on wheels for sick and elderly

  9. Green card information and other immigration matters

  10. Utility problems.

To this office come people for help who are up in years, do not understand all the forms, who need help to fill out various documents, forms and other information they receive from various offices, hospitals, doctors, insurance and the like. Explanations are provided to them in Lithuanian language, forms are completed, and

needs are met.

Cultural Integration

The people from the latest immigration wave (1990) need help to start their lives in a new county, to assimilate into a new culture. There are various documents requiring explanation, forms to be completed, telephone calls to various offices and agencies to be

made. Often the Council has to call various government, medical agencies on their behalf to get clarification.

Resources

The Council has a large library containing books in Lithuanian and English.

The Council's employees visit the elderly in their homes or nursing homes and try to help them solve there problems related to their age, living-conditions etc .

The councils employees or volunteers serve as interpreters accompanying the individuals to the various agencies on order to solve their problems, be it related to an old age, illness,

living quarters, or to the adjustment problems of the newcomers to this country.
